When Elvena rescues a tiny wolf-cub no-one expects it to live. She names him Ulric and, as he grows into a mature animal the two become devoted to one another. Forced to run away from the Valley of Caves because the villagers fear Ulric will kill their livestock, the two share terrible dangers.
